Every field or profession has its specialized vocabulary, hence it is to be expected that a number of words used by the botanical pharmacologist may not ring a bell in the ears of the layman. Also, the early herbalists used words that are no longer current in the medical profession, yet they are necessary in a book dealing with ancient lore. To aid the reader, some 85 of the most common terms are discussed here. For uncommon terms missing from this glossary, the reader is referred to any reliable dictionary.
